With nearly 1 in 2 Canadians expected to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, students at St. Theresa’s Catholic High School in Midland are more determined than ever to help change the future of this disease.
For the past 20 years, Relay for Life has been the Canadian Cancer Society’s largest fundraiser. Relay is unlike any other fundraiser. Where else can you join your friends, family, and co-workers to celebrate those who are battling cancer and those who have survived? It is a 12 hour day walking around the school’s track to raise funds and awareness for those battling cancer. At St. Theresa’s (St. T’s), support for Relay for Life started in 2008. Then, it was an overnight event hosted by student council. Ms. Clancy took over as the teacher advisor in 2009 and they did an event EVERY year until the mission trips started in 2014. Since then, St. T’s has done a relay event every other year.
This years head of the student executive committee, Samantha M., has set a large goal for St. T’s fundraising efforts. “In 2017, the school raised over $27,000 and this year I have full confidence that we will be able to reach our goal of $30,000! When our school community comes together it’s crazy all of the amazing things that we can accomplish. We are already at 40% of our fundraising goal and we still have a month to go! This years event is going to be great. ” said Sam M.
The relay event day is May 24th and it will be a day jam packed with fun, hope and raising awareness of those fighting this disease. Together we can all be bigger than cancer!
