Dual Credit Success Story - Asad Malem

Dual Credit Success Story - Asad Malem
Posted on 06/20/2017

One of the amazing programs that the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board offers to students is the dual credit program. Dual credit is a course where students receive a college and high school credit at the same time and is taught by college faculty and supported by a high school teacher.

Students who take the course are able to explore options for their future after secondary school. We are happy to showcase some of the success stories that are a result of the dual credit program.

AsadIn the fall of 2016, Asad Malem, along with his family, immigrated to Canada from Syria. Not settled in Canada for even a year yet, Asad’s work ethic and determination are evident. Since his level of English was already high, Asad has been finding success in the Grade 12 program at St. Dominic Catholic Secondary School in Bracebridge.

Back in Syria, his father owned a construction firm where all buildings are constructed only with cement blocks and steel beams. Asad has wanted to gain experience working with wood so he enrolled in the Construction Practices dual credit in Muskoka.  The dual credit has taught him how to build walls, roofs, hang doors, complete baseboards, crown molding and joints.

AsadAsad would like to continue his post-secondary studies in mechanical aviation systems but would like to work in the construction field during his summers. He feels very fortunate to have been a part of the dual credit construction course in Bracebridge.
