Every week we celebrate individuals in the SMCDSB community who have been recognized for going above and beyond to help others during the COVID-19 pandemic. This week we are celebrating Oonagh Pooke and Ralph Serra.

Oonagh Pooke is a student at Holy Family Catholic School inoonagh Alliston. After learning about #SMHeros, a local group making medical clothing for hospital staff, Oonagh took up the cause, learned how to sew, and began using her time at home to produce scrub caps for local doctors and nurses. It takes one hour to produce each cap, but as Oonagh points out,  “We’re stuck at home anyway,” and she really doesn’t mind, “especially during a time like this when everyone can use a helping hand.”

Oonagh was nominated by a staff member who said:

“Oonagh is a very compassionate and hard working student.  She always takes on a leadership role in accepting new tasks or projects.  Her determination and commitment allow her to complete each project/task to completion. Oonagh truly displays all aspects of our Catholic Graduate Expectations. She is a discerning believer, and effective communicator, a reflective, creative and holistic thinker, a collaborative contributor,  a self-directed, responsible, lifelong learner,  a caring family member and a responsible citizen. Thank you Oonagh for your wonderful effort to help our community.”

Ralph Serra is a student at Saint Mary Catholic School in Huntsville. He was nominated by a staff member who said:

ralph serra“Every day, Ralph creates a newspaper for his neighbours.  He calls it “Caesars Lane News”. Each day he hand-writes a newspaper that includes news, weather and a joke of the day. He makes copies for his neighbours and then goes to deliver them on his bike. He has helped his neighbours to stay in touch with each other and is a welcome part of their day.”

We would like to thank Oonagh and Ralph for their incredible effort in helping others during this time.
