Every week we celebrate SMCDSB staff members who have been recognized by a parent, student, or colleague.
This week, we are celebrating Julie Austin, Julianne McCord, Joanne Kotlarz, and Sue Roy.
Julie Austin and Julianne McCord were both teachers
in the virtual school and were nominated by a parent:
“As both these teachers have transitioned into the virtual school it's been hard on everyone - teachers, students and parents. I would like to nominate both of my daughters’ teachers not because they are MY children's teachers but because they are exceptional teachers. I've watched my child go from a level 5 reading and jump to level 15 in such a short time. Julianne McCord uses every skill she has to get these children, who were scared and not ready for this virtual world, ready for grade 2! She has built a family in her classroom and has been in this teaching world for so long. She adds in extra time in her day to teach other grades so children can not just learn but have fun learning. She has made these little people so independent it is such a beautiful thing to see . She is a ROCKSTAR TEACHER!! Now for
Mrs. Julie Austin. WOW! In the 9 years I have had children in school I have yet to see or hear a teacher care so much about her students’ wellbeing and mental health! She gives all her support and LOVE to her students. I hear her daily supporting these children in every aspect of their lives. SHE IS FULLY PRESENT! Academically and emotionally and especially in these troubling times, in that age group it is so crucial. It is proven in the way the children respect her back. I can say I know she has absolutely made an imprint on my daughter. Her support is like no other! Both these teachers deserve to be recognized. It's been tough for us all but these wonderful teachers have made it so much easier. Bless them and thank you.”
We are also celebrating Joanne Kotlarz this week.
Joanne is a teacher at St. John Paul Catholic School. She was nominated by a parent who said:
“My daughter struggles in school, during the school closure, virtual learning caused much stress and anxiety. Joanne was very understanding when we had to take a step back from some classes for the sake of my daughter's mental health. When the closure was extended, she reached out looking for ways to connect with my daughter. She offered to meet during her prep time. That simple email really helped my child realize that she is seen and cared for by her teachers. That simple email and offer of support helped my child feel safe and encouraged. The day after she was told about Madame's offer for extra help, she told us she was ready to return to French class. Words cannot express how much I appreciate the role Joanne has played in helping my daughter feel comfortable and safe in these stressful times.”
We are also celebrating Sue Roy this week. Sue is a teacher at St. Marie of the Incarnation Catholic School. She was nominated by a colleague who said:
“I have known Sue for the 8 years we have been at St. Marie of the Incarnation Catholic school. Sue is such a blessing to our school community. I had the privilege of working with Sue in our kindergarten class as she was our music teacher. Sue always came into class with a smile and kindness. The children always felt her kindness by her calm demeanour and her gentle approach to teaching. Miss Roy always offers kind words and is such a joy to be around. Her colleagues are so blessed to have her as a fellow teacher on staff. She is the first to offer help and support to her colleagues and students. I would like to thank Miss Roy for all she has done for our school community and the joy she has brought to all her students.”
We would like to thank Julianne, Julie, Joanne, and Sue for their commitment to Catholic education at our board.
