Grade 7 and 8 students from across Muskoka and Parry Sound had the opportunity to lace up their skates and hit the ice at the Muskoka Lumber Community Center. Hosted by St. Dominic Catholic Secondary School, over 40 young hockey enthusiasts gathered for a full day of skills training and friendly competition as part of the Hockey Canada Skills Academy (HCSA).

The event, led by program instructor Brian Dechene, showcased the hockey program at St. Dominic’s. Students participated in various drills to improve their skating, shooting, and teamwork skills while having fun and enjoying the spirit of the game.

Dan Blum, a four-time Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) championship coach and HSCA teacher, and Jake Yard, the current head coach of the Muskoka Bears Junior C Hockey team, were also on hand to run the day. Their expertise and guidance provided students with invaluable insights into the game.

St. Dominic’s HCSA is not just a one-day event. The school proudly offers a two-credit program for Grade 9 and 10 students, blending athletic development with academic success. This unique opportunity allows students to pursue their passion for hockey while earning school credits.

Jennifer Starratt, an elementary guidance teacher serving Muskoka-Parry Sound schools, said, "It was amazing to watch our students have fun and improve their skills throughout the day - it was really rewarding. We’re excited to keep offering this program and look forward to welcoming more students next year!"
