Ontario's School Food and Beverage Policy
What does it mean for school food and beverage vendors?
The Ontario government has introduced its School Food and Beverage Policy which includes nutrition standards for food and beverages sold in schools.
The policy will apply to food and beverages sold:
- in all venues on school property such as cafeterias, vending machines and tuck shops;
- through all programs, included catered lunch programs; and
- at all events on school property, including bake sales and sport events, for school purposes.
The policy was announced in January, 2010 and took effect on September 1, 2011. All food and beverages sold in schools for school purposes must meet the nutrition standards set out in the policy.
As a vendor of food and beverages in our schools, we need your help to ensure that our board meets these standards. We are asking that food service providers who are interested in selling foods and/or beverages at our schools, follow this process:
- Keep us informed as to new or reformulated products that meet the ‘sell most’ or ‘sell less’ requirements by submitting a revised letter of compliance to Sandra Fujioka at [email protected] or mailing to 345 Livingstone Street East, Barrie ON L4M 7B5.
