Cell Phone Restrictions in the Classroom

Cell Phone Restrictions in the Classroom
Posted on 11/04/2019

As of November 4, 2019, the Ministry of Education updated the Provincial Code of Conduct to include a restriction on the use of mobile devices during instructional time in all schools. This new expectation aligns with the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board’s (SMCDSB) Code of Conduct and many schools at SMCDSB have always reserved the right to limit cell phone use during class time.

Restrictions to cell phones usage in classrooms will limit distractions and enable our educators to focus on teaching and our students on learning. Students may still bring their mobile devices to school, however educators will use their discretion to ensure they are being used appropriately. In some cases, devices may be allowed for educational purposes, health and medical reasons, or to support special education needs.
