Every week we celebrate SMCDSB staff members who have been recognized by a parent, student or colleague.

This week we are celebrating Michelle Navarra and Peter Kosturek.

Michelle is the First Nation, Métis and Inuit Itinerant Teacher at Academic Services in Barrie. She was nominated by a colleague, who said:

“About two years ago, Michelle chose to apply for a brand new position ofmichelle navarra FNMI Itinerant Teacher for her love of wanting the best for everyone.

Prior to this position, she continually infused Indigenous learning into various classes and ensured that our school worked towards Reconciliation at a level the children could understand.  Through this position, Michelle has been able to create numerous modules and resources supporting teachers and students in becoming more aware of our responsibilities towards Truth and Reconciliation.  She has supported many teachers in the board and their students through lessons and experiences rich in authentic voice and cultural appropriateness. Through this collaborative approach, we have all benefited from ensuring that FNMI learning does not become a 'unit'.  Many times I have been with Michelle and teachers will seek her out for her wealth of knowledge, professionalism and commitment.

Recently, I overheard one of the students say "Yeahhh Mrs Navarra is here!"  I think that sums up how we, students and teachers, feel whenever Michelle supports us in all her many responsibilities.”

peter kosturekPeter Kosturek is a teacher at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School in Tottenham. He was nominated by a student, who said:

“He's a real good teacher, making jokes here and there and having everyone pay attention in class. He always has the answer you're looking for when you ask him a question. He is also very open minded to new concepts and ways of thinking.”

We would like to thank Michelle and Peter for their commitment to Catholic education at our board.
