Catholic Board Raises Over a Million for Terry Fox Foundation
Posted on 04/12/2016

It was 35 years ago that Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope to unite Canadians from coast to coast in a dream to find a cure for cancer. In recognition of this milestone, the Terry Fox Foundation compiled a donation history report for school boards across the country in order to demonstrate the value of school donations over the past several decades. At the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board (SMCDSB), 48 schools have raised more than $1,015,000 for cancer research through school sponsored Terry Fox Runs.

Of particular note are St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School, in Tottenham who raised $96,494.69 over 19 years and St. Peter the Apostle Catholic School, in Parry Sound who raised $61,612.81 over 17 years. St. John Paul II Catholic School in Barrie has hosted Terry Fox Runs for 23 years, making it the longest running SMCDSB Terry Fox Run participant.

In 2016 alone, Ontario schools raised more than $5 million for cancer research. The Terry Fox Run is celebrating 35 years today - on April 12, 1980 Terry Fox began his marathon in Newfoundland. Although he was unable to complete his journey, his efforts have made a world-wide difference in helping to achieve Terry's dream to conquer cancer. Catholic schools in Simcoe County and the Districts of Muskoka and Parry Sound look forward to keeping Terry's dream alive.
