Barrie Students Win Volunteer Scholarship

All students in the province are required to complete 40 hours of community service hours in order to attain their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). Some students however, go above and beyond the requirement. Barrie students, Mikaela and Eric, have done just that and were recently awarded the 2017 Auxiliary Student Scholarship for their efforts.

Mikaela Vieira from St. Joan of Arc Catholic High School and Eric McMullen from St. Joseph’s Catholic High School have both been volunteering in the emergency department at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre in Barrie (RVH). Since 2015, Eric has volunteered over 186 hours of service and Mikaela has logged 200 volunteer hours in the past year.

Earlier this month, Mikaela and Eric were presented with $1000 scholarships by RVH Auxiliary president, Janice Williams, at a special evening to honour outstanding volunteers. Since 1996, the hospital auxiliary has awarded 41 scholarships totaling more than $40,000.
